The Disney Princess Half Marathon

My Swag
So, this is what I did this past weekend, had a really good time with some of my Running Group members.  We took a few pictures and I may put one up.  I really do not like taking pictures--I do not feel pretty when I run--the size thing is getting better and I am OK with how I look but I am usually making a face, my hair is up and I just don't like any pictures of myself when running!! That said, I did weigh in before my trip and my weight is 157 lbs, and that is 1 pound less than I was at my last half in October.  I am OK with this because it's been a long winter (not complaining, just cold).  The picture to the left is of my swag.  Oh, also I didn't dress-up---I am just not the tutu princess type.  I wonder how many other Maintainer's did this Half Marathon?

The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food---NY Times Article

A really good article in today's NYTimes.  An investigative report on the industry of snack food.  I love the title because that's what it is--addictive and it was designed to do so.  I can truly say that I have beat the addiction of sugar (processed sugars--small amounts of natural sugar); I don't crave it, don't eat and don't want it.  I have seen a few Maintenance bloggers entertaining the thought of no sugar and I say try it and then try it again.  In the beginning, I did reach for sugary fruit--pineapple, watermelon, mango; now I reach for grapes (1 cup/serving) or strawberries (1/2 cup/serving).  I still feel that this is an individual decision and every body is different.  I found my triggers.  At a dinner a few weeks ago, I gave my slice of cheesecake to my friend sitting next to me  to take home to her husband---she was so happy because she had eaten her slice and she wanted to take something home to him.  It didn't faze me at all and when I got home I ate an orange.  I would love to hear your stories about salt-sugar-fat---the trinity of junk food addiction.
Also, here is where I get a lot of my inspiration.  She breaks down sugar facts, how to cut down on sugar and artificial sweeteners.  The post I am pointing to in the previous link is about sugar and weight gain, perfect!!!

What's mine may definitely not be yours....

Sometimes I start reading other Maintenance and weight loss blogs and I am always shaking my head in agreement.  I can relate to just about everything; I started my weight loss journey when I was 19 years old.  Well, what year is it now?  Yes, I have tried just about everything to lose the weight and to keep it off.  As the quote I love from "Weight of the Nation," "you just never know which time will work for you...."  I remember I bought the book, "The Beverly Hills Diet" and you know what, it didn't work for me.  I only bought the book because I unexpectedly ran into my cousin out and about one day.  Our families used to get together a lot but when my parents retired out west; we all stopped getting together so it had been maybe three years.  The last time we saw each other my weight was down and she had just had her 3rd child in six years.  Well, of course it was reversed this time and I just held my breath because although I don't offer opinions or make comments about a person's weight or size but it's not the same for others, especially a relative. So, I was like "hey M, so good to see you, you look great," we hug, she slightly steps back, looks at my size and says nothing.  Many of us have been there, ouch!!!  We start talking about the kids and then as we are parting ways, she suggests I checkout "The Beverly Hill Diet" because that's how she's lost ~70 lbs (my memory escapes me of the exact amount).  Well, I worked part-time in a bookstore and the book was purchased and read right away.  I gave it a great college try but it didn't work for me.  I say it didn't work for me because the pounds that I lost did not stay off.  I really liked the idea of food combining (its basic premise) but did not have the ability to sustain this way of eating (I remember thinking this or was this cop-out #67??!!!)
Anyway, I think I wrote this just to say you never know which time but keep trying!!!

A Maintenance World Wednesday

As promised I have separated out the Fitness Maintainers and the Health Cooking Maintainers (warning: food cravings).  These are very unique blogs because it's ~65% (imho) of what they blog. It's their workouts and what they have cooked in a very detailed format, for the most part.  I have some more future thoughts for this page and will share or show when I get the time.  I am Maintaining my weight at 157 lbs and I PRd at a 5K last Sunday because I ran (read: tried to run) at my daughter's pace--she slowed down a little for me doing an 11 minute mile (I was exhausted) but that's over and on to the next.  Also, I am so grateful that it was Fat Tuesday yesterday and I didn't even notice.  I really love living in an area whereas it's not heavily populated with pazcki's and kingcakes.  Happy Wednesday!!!

What's New in Weight Maintenance research

Over the weekend the following six citations landed in my inbox.  I get so excited each month to see what's new in weigh maintenance research.  Some of the keywords of this batch include, vitamin D, calcium, cardiovascular, and sugar-sweetened beverages.  Please feel free to click on the title link, which will take you to the abstract in PubMed and the related citations which point to articles previously done having many of the same keywords (MeSH terms) and/or other related research recently completed. A few of them are "epub ahead of print" and may or may not be available in full text right now.  Please feel free to email me if you have a question about these citations.

Maintenance Celebrated...A Super Bowl Ad, no less...

Well, I will take celebrating Maintenance anyway I can get it...although I am sure Subway has no idea that's what they were doing.  Jared Fogle, who famously made eating Subway sandwiches to lose over 200 lbs, is celebrating 15 years of maintenance.  Although unconventional, even still, he lost a ton of weight and has kept it off.  He has gone on to write a book, become the face of Subway, get married and has maintained his weight loss.    Definitely, congratulations are in order.

Healthy People 2020 Structured Evidence Queries

I just wanted to put this out to those of you who like information and research for your blogs.  This project covers a lot of agencies but because of my job, I tend to make note of the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health.  The Healthy People 2020 Structured Evidence Queries is basically all the evidence done for you with pre-formulated searches you click on.  The citations are defaulted from most recent so you get to see for yourself what is coming out in the area of let's say: Large Topic area of Nutrition and Weight Status---then it breaks down the outcome objectives of Healthy People 2020---when you click on the box in the left margin for PubMed Search---for some of them the PubMed Search opens and then for some it breaks it down further into sub-sub-objectives then click the PubMed Search to see the results.  I clicked on NWS 8--Increase the proportion of adults who are at a healthy weight--which is close to what I research--some of the results tap into types of diets--home-delivered dietary approaches and it's influence for the hypertensive or the fast food and obesity link.  Please take a look at my post here  if you have questions about the abstract or  if you want to know how to get the full-text of an article at your public library please feel free to email me.
