from the Maintainer's Virtual Bookshelf--"Slim for Life" by Jillian Michaels

Just downloaded it today on my Kindle; the release date just whizzed right by me.  Chapter 1--Eating, section:  Slim Calorie Habits.  I also loved the dedication page, "I'm sick of sappy book dedications...this book is straight from me to you."  She is so funny.  And did anyone notice that she didn't appear with Danni on the Today Show on Tuesday.  I actually loved that because she is going to have to deal with all the attention on her own.  I dunno this just struck me---I was off on Tuesday and got to watch it.  She is so serious (imho) about helping us all get fit and maintain.  Unfortunately, this is going to be a slow read.  But I am so pleased with the structure of the book, Chapter titles seem awesome---So Much for Maintainers!!!!  A Section toward the end of Chapter 8--'No Tip Left Behind'--does this sound spectacular or what?  And then she has Selected References and an Index--heaven!!!
Sorry, just the Librarian and former part-time Bookseller in me.  Can't wait to give my favorite excerpts and/or sections.  I just don't think I could write a review per se.

Quote from last night's Biggest Loser

I jotted this down and I am pretty sure it was the contestant Jackson who said it, "Weight loss is mental. You have to want it more than you want a cupcake!!"  The exclamation points are mine.  I would say insert any word here that would apply.  To me this quote resonated on so many levels---I am sure he meant this in its most literal sense; but it seemed almost metaphoric for a lot of things in life but especially weight loss and maintenance.  We have all tried many times to lose weight and then there is this time (presently) whereas everything is clicking and makes sense.  I have realized for me that it was a lot of mental and spiritual work.  The mental for me was more so getting out of my own head---developing a sense of self, self-esteem.  I had zero self-esteem my whole life--I didn't love myself, I never liked the way I looked--I could go on and on.  My development of self took years--I think I owned a self-help section of a bookstore.  I still feel that I am a work in progress but I have a much higher sense of self.  What's so interesting about the quote is that I heard the "mental" part over 15 years or more ago from Oprah, yes, Oprah said that "Weight loss is very mental."  Or something like this, but I definitely remember the mental part and just being confused.  I thought that weight loss was eating less and exercising and then, presto!!!  As I struggled to keep the weight off, I started thinking about the spiritual which helped the mental.  Did anyone else hear this quote or have ever heard something like this?  Let me know.

Always Remember

I always think of and always remember my sister's Birthday, which is today, March 7th.  She would have been 61 years old.  I remember thinking about her turning 60 last year.  I asked my mother, "How do you think she would have been about turning 60?"  My mother thought that she would have been OK with it.  I agreed.  I think she would have gotten a hoot out of turning 60 years old. She got her Bachelor's Degree in English with a minor in Drama (or Theater Art) from Central Michigan University in 1974.  She became a high school English teacher and did acting/theater workshops in the summers.  She self-published a book of poetry just before she died in 1983.   I also think about blogging--she would have LOVED blogging and social networks.  I will do better with pictures.  I have them.  Thanks for reading.

A Maintainer's World Wednesday

Encouragement--I have been around  the blogosphere this week and came upon a group of weight loss bloggers in their mid to late 20s--who give each other encouragement and inspiration.  There are a few new Maintainers that I have found and they are blended in below.  I like this group because again mid to late 20s=after college, on your own for the first time, bills, seeking/finding a mate, getting married, getting pregnant, having a baby... Some in this grouping are still struggling, some are pregnant (amazing how we know these things) and then 3 of them got it.  The math of it is statistically correct--of those who lose weight, only ~5 percent maintain the weight loss.  There were 13 that I counted and only 3 are Maintaining=2.3%.  I am so glad they are there for each other and many of them seem very consistent in their postings--the good, the bad, the up, the down.  Happy Wednesday and Merry Maintaining!!
