What's new in weight maintenance research?

Another month has passed already... looks like some new and interesting articles--#3 is Free so click through the link to PubMed Central and then click on the pdf --upper right and read. The others look good but they are known as "epub ahead of print." (there are no volume, issue or page numbers)  Depending on the Publisher---these may be full text online first and then placed in the print versions.  It's frustrating for librarians because we have no idea which publishers place them online first until we are asked to investigate. I am slowly figuring out which ones and if you have questions feel free to email me. You are able to click on any of the titles to read the abstracts.

A very good article, it's a case study.  The subject has sustained her weight loss for over a year, hopefully 2 now--the publishing time lapse.  "...researchers have questioned whether efforts at weight loss through attempting changes in eating behavior remain justified given their predictable pattern of failture beyond the short term."  This statement is a little harsh but I totally agree.  Exercise is a strong predictor of maintained weight loss but the basis for this unclear says the article.  Be sure to check out Table 1--I love this because they recorded her numbers---just like I advocate.  She's a 48 year old white woman.  I will start writing down my resting heart rate, sometimes I look at it but I don't know it.  They indicate in their discussion that,"...this case report indicates relationships between theory-based psychosocial factors, behavioral changes and weight reduction that may inform the treatment of obesity."  Meaning, if you are struggling, take this article to your doctor.

Green tea for weight loss and weight maintenance in overweight or obese adults. Would love to read what the evidence-based approach to this will be...Cochrane review articles are usually long---not bad, this one is 19 pages--I just pulled it up to save it.

Surgical Weight Loss: Impact on Energy Expenditure. Although this is an epub ahead of print; this article is probably available online full text if your library has a subscription to Springer--this is one of the Publishers that I am sure places their early articles online---calling them Online First articles--geniuses, whereas PubMed calls them epub ahead of print, hence my frustation.  Anyway, another good one to get to.

What's new in weight maintenance research?

I received the following citations in my inbox this morning from PubMed.  I found 3 of them interesting, my notes are below in red. #s 2, 3 & 5; my search is keyword and pertains to "weight maintenance." What is good about the 3 articles that I like is that they are also freely available to read full-text.

Related citations --the focus here is on Cardio Protection, so the severity of a one day fasting/week is understandable.  I am sure many will disagree with me because it's been said that not eating will throw off a person's metabolism.  They said the same about low calorie or high fat diets for years also.  I feel every body is different and if this helps to protect an obese woman's heart and possibly jump start weight loss, well....again, this is only my opinion. Related citations--found this abstract to be fascinating and hope to have the time soon to read the entire article, I read up a little on dialectical behavior therapy and thought it makes perfectly good sense to apply this to obese emotional eaters, I like these results: "The ability of DBT to limit the upward trajectory of weight gain in obese patients with high degrees of emotional eating suggests that DBT may also help limit the increase or even prevent onset of obesity related morbidity in these patients."

Related citations--I think there are a lot of things going on in this study done in Germany according to the abstract.  I do feel that there is a ton of data to be lifted from this study with respect to whether those who seek outpatient medical care and if they gain or lose weight.  I think maybe they even have data on whether or not they sought more or less outpatient treatment because of co-morbidity's like diabetes, heart/circulation problems or breathing/asthma problems. I would love to find out what they mean in their conclusions of "weight development."
